Can you be a real estate broker and work alone?
October 31, 2009 | 2 Comments
I am taking a few classes this summer with the intention of passing the CA real estate agent exam. I have a BS degree (in biology), just found out that all I would need to be a real estate broker in CA is to take 8 classes and pass a test. I am wondering if I just just try to go for the broker license instead. My goal is to just work less than part-time, by myself, to supplement my current job, and mostly to be first in line to buy my own rental properties. Would a broker license be good for me?

It would if you have the $$$ to pay for the insurance. You will forking out a lot of dough to be working part time.
As long as you have a BS degree, you would not have to prove 2 years of full-time work as a real estate salesperson. If you only want the license to buy properties, I guess you can make money as a part time broker. Remember, that you will have to register your business, maybe post a sign on your house (required in my state), pay for Realtor and MLS membership, buy errors and omissions insurance, and be responsible for paying your own US and state taxes and social security. Document your car usage and mileage for your business, and all other expenses of doing business.
